If you were to ask 100 football fans who the best Premier League signing has been this season, chances are at least half of them would name West Ham’s Dimitri Payet.
The 28-year-old has been magnificent for the Hammers since his summer move from Marseille, scoring seven goals and registering six assists in 20 Premier League appearances.
But the modest Payet doesn’t believe he’s been the standout signing in England’s top division this term - he reckons Leicester City’s N'Golo Kanté is more deserving of that particular accolade.

"It is very nice to hear that people have said that about me. I am happy with how I have performed this season and how the team are doing so far," Payet told West Ham’s official website, per Goal.
"But I would say there are other players such as Kanté who arrived from Ligue 1 and has had an incredible season in Leicester's rise to the top of the table. A lot of that is down to him."
Kanté finally getting the credit he deserves
Kanté, until relatively recently, had gone a little under the radar.
Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez have taken most of the plaudits this season, but Leicester’s indefatigable French midfielder has been as influential as any player in Claudio Ranieri’s squad.
Kanté only has one goal and three Premier League assists to his name this season, hence why he has received less recognition than some of his teammates, but your average football fan is now acutely aware of just how effective the former Caen midfielder has been for the Foxes.
Leicester are currently without the tenacious Frenchman, who has a hamstring injury, and the sooner they get him back the better their chances of winning the title.
Ranieri’s side recorded a 2-2 draw against West Brom at the King Power Stadium on Tuesday evening, but it might have been a different story had Kanté been available.
Other contenders for signing of the season
There are a few other candidates for best signing of the season.
Petr Cech could go down as the Premier League’s signing of the season if Arsenal win the title in May.
Similarly, Toby Alderweireld will be a serious contender if Tottenham end up lifting the Premier League trophy.
West Ham aren’t in contention to win the league, but they do still have an outside chance of finishing inside the top four.
This would obviously be a tremendous achievement for the Hammers - even a top-six finish would be fantastic - and Payet would have to take much of the credit if they do secure Champions League football.
