Great Britain's women's team sprint squad have failed to qualify for the Olympic Games in Rio this summer.
Jess Varnish and Katy Marchant needed to finish two clear places ahead of France to secure their place in Rio on the opening day of the Track World Championships in London.
But the British pair could only finish in fifth place in 32.903 seconds and France were seventh in 33.258secs.
The qualification period concluded in London after the World Cup series and Britain did not accrue enough points to advance.
Becky James, a two-time world champion in individual events in 2013, cheered on from track centre as Varnish and Marchant raced their heat.
But Britain missed out on a medal ride as China advanced quickest, with Russia second. They will duel for gold, with Germany and Australia riding for bronze.
For Varnish it was further Olympic heartbreak. She was disqualified along with Victoria Pendleton at the London 2012 Games.
