Wickham has four goals in his last two games.

Connor Wickham must maintain form to return Crystal Palace to winning ways

Published 1 Comments

It was only a few months ago when we were talking about Crystal Palace as potential candidates for Europa League football next season.

Now, they are the only Premier League side without a win in 2016 and lie just nine points above the relegation places.

The problem that Palace have faced in recent times, having failed to win any of their last 11 league fixtures, is a lack of goals and they need Connor Wickham to maintain his current vein of form between now and May.

The Englishman has previous experience of relegation battles - he was part of a Sunderland side to have fought against the drop in the past three seasons - and will need to use this to ensure Palace aren't forced to battle for their own safety.

The 22-year-old scored crucial goals to keep the Black Cats in the Premier League in the 2013/14 season, including hugely important strikes against Chelsea and Manchester City.

He faces a completely different challenge this time around, though. Whereas he played a key role in a great escape two years ago, he now needs to simply stop his side from free falling.

West Bromwich Albion v Crystal Palace - Premier League

Upon analysing Wickham's career so far, it's evident his goalscoring runs come in short bursts - and the Eagles will be hoping his two goals against Sunderland on Tuesday night and West Brom last weekend have marked the beginning of such a run.

While the Englishman’s ability to take a chance has often been criticised, he showed what he's capable of with a wonderful volley against Tony Pulis' Baggies (see below) despite being on the end of a 3-2 defeat.

Palace are far too good for relegation, but they'll need Wickham to continue his fine form if they're to get back to winning ways and ensure no threat of the drop emerges.
