Manchester United have held secret talks with Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

As reported by the Mirror, it has been claimed that the Old Trafford hierarchy have sounded out the player's representatives over his availability ahead of the summer transfer window.

The report claims that the Dortmund ace, who was recently crowned African Player of the Year, had been earmarked as United's No.1 striker target.

The Red Devils have had their fair share of problems in attack throughout the course of the season, so it's not entirely surprising that they are hoping to add to their front line ahead of 2016/17.

After selling the trio of Robin van Persie, Javier Hernandez and Radamel Falcao before the start of the campaign, Louis van Gaal's options have been limited in attack. Only one side in the top ten has managed fewer goals than the Red Devils this season.

Striker struggles

Wayne Rooney, who is currently on the sidelines, has failed to produce the goods on a consistent basis, while summer signing Anthony Martial has often operated on the wing.

18-year-old striker Marcus Rashford has recently stepped up, but he still has a long way to go in his development.

The addition of Aubameyang, then, would completely change the dynamic of the squad as they attempt to return to the summit of England's elite division.

The Dortmund striker has been superb under the guidance of Thomas Tuchel this season - he has netted 22 goals in 25 Bundesliga outings - and would represent a major coup for the Red Devils.

But it's not going to be easy for the club to secure the 26-year-old's services. The Mirror claim that Dortmund aren't prepared to sell their talisman, but United would be willing to pay over £60m to complete the deal.

Summer of change

It most definitely looks set to be yet another summer of change at Old Trafford and it will prove an interesting period for all involved.

The long-term future of manager Louis van Gaal remains uncertain - United have failed to come to prominence under his regime, currently sitting in sixth place in the Premier League - and Jose Mourinho has been heavily linked with the post.

Van Gaal still has a shot at redemption, however; his side's crucial derby victory over Manchester City on Sunday has given the club a realistic chance of securing a place in the top four, while they will also be hoping to secure FA Cup silverware this term.
