Lionel Messi is a better team player than Cristiano Ronaldo claims Xavi

Published 6 Comments

Former Barcelona midfielder Xavi believes that Lionel Messi is a 'much better team player' than Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.

Messi and Ronaldo, of course, are out on their own as the standout players in world football, but, for Xavi, there is no doubting who the No.1 is.

The Spain international claims that Messi is the 'best footballer in the world' and believes that, while Ronaldo is very fit, Messi has fitness and intelligence.

Xavi told The New Arab, as per, "Ronaldo is a goalscorer, and Messi is also a goalscorer; however, Messi is a much better team player than Ronaldo.

"I think Messi is the best footballer in the world. In football, there are two important elements: fitness and intelligence. Ronaldo is very fit but Messi has both the fitness as well as the intelligence, so simply put he is better."

Stats this season

Based on this season alone, there's not much to split Ronaldo and Messi in Spain's elite division.

Real Madrid's talisman has racked up 28 goals and nine assists from 30 outings, while Messi has 22 goals from 25 games and has ten assists to his name.

Clearly, then, there's not a great deal to separate the aforementioned duo, but it's Messi who looks set to get his hands on another La Liga title this term. As it stands, the Catalans sit at the summit of the division - nine and ten points in front of Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid respectively.

Messi and Ronaldo will once again take to the field together as Barcelona play host to Real Madrid on April 2.
