Borussia Dortmund fans have made it quite clear that they don’t want to see Mario Gotze back at Signal Iduna Park.

Gotze has been linked with a return to Dortmund, three years after he left the German club for their domestic rivals Bayern Munich, as well as Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool in recent weeks.

However, Dortmund fans held up a banner during the 3-2 win over Werder Bremen on Saturday, letting Gotze know in no uncertain terms that he isn’t welcome back. (Scroll down this page to see the banner).

“Milan or Madrid – Just not Dortmund. P*** off Gotze,” the strongly-worded banner stated.

Dortmund fans saw Gotze as one of their own and were stunned when, before the 2013 Champions League final, it was announced he would be joining Bayern Munich after his release clause was triggered.

They haven’t forgiven the World Cup winner and have no desire to see him back at the club where his career began.

Gotze's work ethic criticised

Gotze has flattered to deceive since joining the Bavarians and former Bayern Munich and Germany midfielder Mehmet Scholl has put that down to a lack of effort in training.

“Why can’t he produce consistent performances?” Scholl said on ARD television, per the Liverpool Echo. “For me the answer is obvious - he has to train much, much more.

“I remember when he was very young at Dortmund. He was an arrow, he was so fast, he was so athletic. At the moment he is so far removed from that.”

Klopp still likely to move for Gotze

Whether that’s enough to deter Klopp from making a move for the playmaker is unclear.

Gotze produced the best performances of his career so far under the charismatic German coach, who replaced Brendan Rodgers at Anfield last October.
