One of most new and exciting programmes that will air on the WWE Network in the near future is the upcoming Global Cruiserweight Series; a tournament which will crown the greatest Cruiserweight wrestler on the planet.
News broke of the tournament earlier this year, leading to speculation as to which stars will be featured in the series and would receive the huge opportunity of performing inside of a WWE ring.
It’s a real breakthrough in the wrestling industry, as the WWE are now working with smaller companies and giving talented stars the platform to get their name out there and hopefully carve out an even bigger career for themselves.
This week, WWE COO Triple H – who will defend his WWE World Heavyweight Championship against Roman Reigns this Sunday at WrestleMania – revealed the first seven participants who will take part in the tournament.
There are now 25 spots left to fill so we should expect some more big names to be added in the coming weeks; the 32-man tournament will air on the WWE Network over a 10-week period and it’ll take place at Full Sail University; the home of NXT.
BIG NAME STARS
NXT’s Rich Swann is one of the first names to be included in the series; Swann signed with the company last year and he’s really impressed viewers on NXT. His latest outing saw him put on a brilliant showing against current champion, Finn Balor – although he came up short, this tournament will allow him to get his name out there to the WWE audience.
Johnny Gargano and Tomasso Ciampa have also been revealed as competitors in the tournament; they haven’t officially signed with the WWE but they’ve impressed whenever they’ve appeared on NXT; whether it’s in tag team action or singles competition.
International stars have also been announced and it’s got fans buzzing about the prospect of seeing them in a ring, should they qualify. Ho Ho Lun and Akira Tozawa – who mainly performs for Dragon Gate – have also been added while Noam Dar has also been added; he’s a big name on the British independent scene while he’s also performed for companies such as Global Force Wrestling.
WORKING WITH INDEPENDENT PROMOTIONS
However, the name that has fans excited the most right now is Zack Sabre Jr; he’s already touted as one of the favourites to win the whole tournament. He’s established himself as one of the finest wrestlers on the planet today and his technical wrestling is something which could see him stand out compared to other Cruiserweights involved.
Regarding the talents announced so far, Triple H let his thoughts be known during a conference call, he said:
“It’s a very diverse group, we’re scouting the globe and looking for the absolute best talent to be involved with this.”
Independent organisations such as PROGRESS Wrestling, Revolution Pro Wrestling and EVOLVE Wrestling are going to play hosts for the qualifying matches for the series, keep an eye out for more big names to be announced in the coming weeks.
