Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera believes the Red Devils have the necessary qualities to beat rivals Manchester City to the fourth Champions League spot.

Impressive victories in recent weeks have seen United close the gap on the Citizens, which included an away win at the Etihad just before the international break.

Louis van Gaal's men sit just one point below City - a gap which Herrera believes they will close.

He said, as per the Daily Mirror: "When you’re fifth in the table and want to be in the top four, you have to maintain this form.

"It’s not going to be easy because Man City also want to be in the Champions League, but we have to fight for it and I think we’re ready.

"We're just one point behind them and I think the last game we showed that we are a little bit better than them right now.

"We beat them away in the Manchester derby so we can be optimistic."

The 26-year-old also cites the return of several key players and their remaining fixtures as boosts in their pursuit of a top-four finish.

"We are recovering some important players," he added, "like Wayne [Rooney], Ash [Ashley Young], Antonio [Valencia], Phil Jones and [Luke] Shaw and that gives us confidence.

"They [City] have to play against Newcastle away. Newcastle is playing to avoid relegation so it is going to be tough for them.

"We have to play Tottenham next, but when we play against top teams, I’m not so worried about our performance because I think we usually do quite well."

Van Gaal's side secured their fourth-straight home victory against Everton on Sunday, with Anthony Martial scoring the game's only goal.

Four wins in their last five games has seen the Red Devils close the gap between themselves and City by five points, Manuel Pellegrini's men managing just two wins during such time.
