Manchester United players stunned after Ashley Young replaced Marcus Rashford in attack

Manchester United players were left stunned after manager Louis van Gaal replaced teenager Marcus Rashford with Ashley Young in attack against Tottenham on Sunday.

This has been reported by The Sun, who claim that players of the Red Devils openly questioned the Dutchman at White Hart Lane.

United succumbed to a humiliating 3-0 defeat at the hands of Spurs and it appears that players have now turned on their manager.

The report claims that Van Gaal told Rashford at the interval that he had been spending too much time looking for the ball out wide, while the Dutchman also told him that he had failed to make any runs behind Tottenham's centre-back pairing of Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen.

Van Gaal swiftly replaced Rashford but opted to play ex-Aston Villa man Young up front instead of striker Anthony Martial, who continued to operate out wide.

North London nightmare

When Rashford was removed from the field of play, United were still on level terms with Spurs, but it's safe to say that things went horribly wrong in the second period.

Young, who played in three different positions throughout the second half, failed to make an impact on proceedings, while full-backs Matteo Darmian and Marcus Rojo struggled as Spurs ran riot.

Van Gaal struggles

By all accounts, then, things have turned sour at Old Trafford and it's far from certain as to whether there will be a way back for Van Gaal at this stage.

As it stands, United are now unlikely to secure a place in next year's Champions League competition - they currently sit four points behind fourth placed Manchester City - while they face a tough test to secure a place in the semi-final of the FA Cup as they prepare to face West Ham United at Upton Park on Wednesday night.

A defeat at the hands of Slaven Bilic's side would come as a major blow for Van Gaal, who appears to be fighting for his long-term future at the club.

Exiting the FA Cup and failure to secure a top-four finish will surely see the experienced Dutchman lose his job, but the United hierarchy still appear to be backing him.

The dynamic has to change in Manchester sooner rather than later, but will action be taken? Jose Mourinho is available and it may well be time to bring the Portuguese tactician to the club.
