Nearly two years into his three year contract at Manchester United, Louis van Gaal is hoping for a miracle now to save his season. Four points behind neighbours Manchester City with six games to go is not impossible, but with United's up-and-down form, seems highly unlikely.
Defeat number nine on Sunday in a season which has flattered to deceive, against a Spurs team chasing the title, has left United with an uphill battle to secure Champions League football next season. Van Gaal is still convinced it can be achieved and as long as there are points to play for, will continue to champion that opinion.
For some Manchester United fans, finishing in the top four alone is clearly not good enough for a club of its stature. With last summers spending going over the £100 million mark, fans could be excused for thinking the glory days of competing for the title were back.

Poor recruitment and bad management has resulted in another poor league campaign.

Players complained in the press at the start of the season about how rigid Van Gaal's tactics were on a match day. This season has seen wingers playing at full-back, full-backs playing centre-half, wingers playing as strikers and Marouane Fellaini, well Fellaini just playing!
It has all been very robotic and mechanical like, players not being able to express themselves through fear of being dropped for breaching the manager's "philosophy"
Which brings me along nicely to the "philosophy".
From Van Gaal's arrival in July 2014, the manager has always said that the players must learn his philosophy. But what is it? What does it consist of? Since he continues to play players out of position and changes the system from one week to the next, how on earth are the players supposed to stick to the plan?
United went nearly three months without scoring a goal in the first half of any game at home. Nine home games, no goals in the first half. Disgusting, boring, dull, just some of the words used by fans.
Rumours are that Jose Mourinho is poised to take over in the summer? It's looking like that the majority of Manchester United fans would kindly pack Mr Van Gaal and his philosophy on the first plane back to Amsterdam.
