Sergio Aguero has become the second fastest player in history to score 100 Premier League goals.

The Manchester City ace found the net to give the Citizens the lead against relegation-threatened Newcastle.

Aguero headed home Aleksandar Kolarov’s free-kick in the 14th minute, although he did appear to be offside. Not that he, or City fans, will care. Scroll down the page to watch the goal.

It took 147 games for the Argentinian to reach the landmark, 23 more than Alan Shearer’s record. He beats Thierry Henry (160 appearances), Ian Wright (173) and Robbie Fowler (175) in quickest to reach the century.

Manchester City had to settle for a share of the spoils as Vernon Anita equalised before half-time. Neither side was able to find a winner.

Aguero's goal

A win would have put Manuel Pellegrini’s side seven points ahead of fifth-placed Manchester United, who have a game in hand.

Instead, their lead over their neighbours is five points, and United have the chance to reduce the deficit when they take on Crystal Palace at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, things are looking grim for Newcastle despite the result. It was hoped that Saturday’s 3-0 win over Swansea would spark a late revival but Rafa Benitez’s side needed a victory to move out of the bottom three.

Newcastle United v Manchester City - Premier League

Benitez, who revealed today that he passed on the chance to sign Aguero when he was Liverpool’s manager, has a lot of work to do.

Games are running out for the Toon to lift themselves out of the relegation zone and their lucrative signings in both the summer and winter transfer windows haven’t paid off.

And their attempts at survival don't get any easier. They travel to a Liverpool who have scored 10 goals in their past three games on Saturday.
