Benitez returned to Merseyside today.

Liverpool throw away two-goal lead against relegation-threatened Newcastle

Newcastle just love to put their fans through the mill. There can be no other explanation for it.

Just a few days after sealing a solid comeback point against Manchester City, the Magpies found themselves 2-0 down against Liverpool at Anfield inside 45 minutes having failed to muster a single shot on target.

Daniel Sturridge had given the home side the lead after just two minutes, before Adam Lallana scored a beauty from around 20 yards out on the half-hour mark.

They say 2-0 is the most dangerous scoreline in football (although that should probably be amended to 'Liverpool winning 2-0 is the most dangerous scoreline in football') and it was completely out of nowhere that Newcastle fought their way back into the game.

Firstly, Papiss Cisse pulled one back for his side just after the action resumed, and then unlikely hero Jack Colback bagged his first goal of the season with a deflected effort following an Andros Townsend cross.

That was of course enough to send Liverpool fans (and Emmanuel Frimpong) into overdrive, as they laid into their team for showcasing their frankly hilarious ineptitude when it comes to holding on to a lead. You can check out the best of the reaction below.

Of course, pulling the strings from the touchline was Rafa Benitez, the man who led Liverpool to Champions League glory 11 years ago. Understandably, the 56-year-old was certainly a talking point after the full-time whistle.

The Spanish boss, making his return to Merseyside, has been charged with helping to save Newcastle from the drop, and while points against Manchester City and Liverpool are not to be sniffed at, they may not be enough to keep them in the top flight.
