Wayne Rooney produces superb goal-line clearance against Everton

Wayne Rooney produced a superb goal-line clearance in the early stages of the FA Cup semi-final between Manchester United and Everton at Wembley.

The United captain, who grew up an Everton fan and still supports the Merseyside outfit, ran the length of the pitch following a break by the Toffees and somehow managed to get back in time to clear Romelu Lukaku’s shot-cum-cross off the line.

Rooney, for his efforts, also collided into the post. But United fans loved the forward’s work ethic and chanted his name for several minutes afterwards. (Scroll down this page to watch the video).

Rooney desperate to win FA Cup

"Of course, I think it is a massive trophy. It is a trophy that, growing up as a youngster, I used to love watching and I was fortunate enough to see Everton lift the FA Cup in 1995 when I was nine years old,” Rooney was quoted as saying by the Mirror last season.

"It is something which I would love to do and hopefully it can be this year."

It wasn’t to be last year - but it could be a different story this term.
