British number two Heather Watson failed to capitalise on her lucky loser status as she went out in the first round of the Madrid Open on Sunday.

The 23-year-old was broken twice in each set as she went down 7-5 6-4 to Australia's world number 39 Daria Gavrilova.

Watson had lost to Mirjana Lucic-Baroni in the final round of qualifying but went through after Yulia Putintseva was ruled out due to illness.

Defeat was a blow for Watson, who is now set to lose the top 56 ranking she requires for Olympic qualification next week.
