WWE fans were generally shocked when it was decided to continue with the United States Championship feud between Kalisto and Ryback.
Ryback received another US title shot at WWE Payback, which at first look, didn't make sense. At further evaluation however, it very well could have.

Fans have speculated that he might come back to reclaim the United States Championship that he lost at the Hell in a Cell event when he decided to request time off from the company to deal with injuries.
If Cena was to come back to regain the United States Championship, then it would have made complete sense to put the championship on a heel wrestler. Although it's fully possible that Cena's return could engage in a face vs. face match with Kalisto, the current United States Champion, it would have made more sense to get the belt on a heel champion so that the babyface could then return and take it.
If WWE were going to go down the route of John Cena returning to regain the United States Championship then this would have been the likely scenario. Seeing as it didn't happen, it's now possible that when Cena does return on the May 30th edition of Raw, he might be embarking on something new, such as a feud for a different championship or even a non-title feud.
Seeing as Ryback has once again lost on the WWE kickoff show to Kalisto, the question of why the match was even booked has been asked with many people believing it to be a waste of both Kalisto and the United States Championship.
The US Championship has lost a lot, if not all, of it's prestige since John Cena was the championship, as the belt has found itself relegated to the kickoff at the last three pay-per-views.
There are no plans announced for the belt at the upcoming Extreme Rules event but if the last three months are anything to go by, then the belt will continue to drift off into the wrestling wilderness.
