Jim Ross says WWE must 'follow up' Rusev's US title number one contendership

After Ryback's second consecutive loss to Kalisto for the WWE United States Championship, a new number one contender for the title needed to be determined, so a Battle Royal was set up on this week's Monday Night Raw.

The Battle Royal finished after Rusev was the last man left in the ring after throwing Zack Ryder over the top rope. The Bulgarian Brute will now challenge The King of Flight for his United States title, which will likely be at Extreme Rules on May 22 although that is yet to be confirmed.

WWE Hall of Famer and former commentator Jim Ross commented on the number one contender's match for the US championship on this week's Raw in a recent blog post on his website.

He revealed he isn't bothered by the result, but he wants the WWE to 'follow up' the outcome in order to elevate the title to the status it deserves to have as a minor championship, rather than one which is constantly fought for on pay-per-view preshows.

He said: "Rusev winning the US Title #1 contenders battle royal did not bother me as I'm one who thought that Rusev was on his way to really being special when his winning steak was prematurely ended. The key with this victory is the always prominent 'follow up.'

"In any event, the US Title needs comparable TLC that the Intercontinental Title is currently receiving in order to take positive steps in resurrecting this long standing title from pre show, prelim status."

This could be the start of a great booking angle for Rusev once more as a singles competitor, after his time with Sheamus, Alberto Del Rio, and King Barrett in the League of Nations didn't live up to expectation.

Many members of the WWE Universe will be hoping The Bulgarian Brute will be booked in a similar style to what he once was during his early run on the main roster when he first made his debut, and during his time as United States Champion; an unstoppable force who went undefeated for a long time.

Rusev has the looks and in-ring ability to relive that persona once more, and with The Ravishing Russian Lana as his mouthpiece, he can really go far as the United States title holder once more. He just has to be booked as dominant over Kalisto in their match.

Better yet, WWE could soon be reviving an old rivalry if Rusev becomes United States Champion, as it won't be long until John Cena is back on the main roster (expected to be Memorial Day) meaning the company could bring back their WrestleMania 31 feud once more over the title.

If they do, this would certainly live up to Ross' hopes of the WWE following up Rusev's number one contenders win, and also bring some much-needed TLC to the US title.
