The pair had allegedly fallen out over an 18-foot net installed in Wilshere's garden to stop balls going over his fence.
According to the same source, the police were called after he told Cathcart: "you don't want to mess with me."
But Wilshere has taken to social media to deny the claims, tweeting: "Today's sun story is completely untrue, me spitting at an OAP? Come on...this is harmful to me and my family!! (sic)."
The accusation could be a massive blow to the England international's hopes of being selected for Euro 2016, particularly as it is not even the first time this season he has had off-field problems.
Only last month, he was filmed speaking to the police after a brawl in a London nightclub.
In the past, he has also been accused of spitting at a taxi driver who was wearing a Tottenham hat. He escaped with a police caution for that incident.
Wilshere hinted at the row with an Instagram post of his new goal, writing: "At least Arch is a fan of my new goal."
Despite his talent, injuries and disciplinary problems are plaguing his career. He has been reprimanded by his club for being photographed smoking cigarettes and a shisha pipe in previous seasons, and these latest claims will no doubt raise some big concerns for Gunners boss Arsene Wenger.
