WWE has recently announced the names of several WWE superstars that have been released from their contracts and 'future endeavoured' as a result.
While a large majority of the releases were to be completely expected, one major shock to fans was that of Santino Marella.
Many WWE fans were unaware that Marella was even under contract with the company after he announced that he would be retiring from the sport of professional wrestling towards the end of 2014.

Santino Marella retired at a house show in Toronto back in 2014 in order to have neck surgery. While Marella has made several one-time-only guest appearances since then, he was officially released from contract and moved to the alumni section in the middle of 2015.
We saw him come back to guest star at the Slammy Awards back in December, following up the next night in a one-night-only programme with the Cosmic Wasteland.

It was the belief that this was Santino's final day with the company and he was removed from the superstars section on WWE.com
It now seems that Santino Marella had signed a legends contract with WWE back in December, which would allow him to make occasional sporadic appearances, such as presenting the WWE Network show, Rumble Lottery.
The contract was apparently signed in the middle of December and that is the contract that Marella has now been released from. Marella was not signed to WWE as a member of the active roster, he was a legends talent. Many people simply did not know this to be a fact.
Santino has not done anything in WWE for the last few months, the fact that he got the chop is not all that surprising, but the surprising part is that he was under contract in the first place.
Since he has done little to anything in the time that he's been under that contract, it is no wonder as to why he has now been released.
Santino Marella thanked WWE in a tweet (see below) published minutes after his name was added to the constantly updating WWE released names post.
