Change appears imminent at Manchester United following a third-successive underwhelming campaign since Sir Alex Ferguson retired.
The Red Devils struggled under David Moyes and have fared no better under the tutelage of Louis van Gaal, whose future at Old Trafford is in considerable doubt.
With Champions League football seemingly out of the question and FA Cup success the best United can wish for, some serious questions now need to be asked of how exactly this once elite side can restore their status as an English giant.

New signings are most definitely needed to reinvigorate the club's lacklustre squad.
Renato Sanches was the man tipped to do just that until he signed for Bayern Munich recently, and it seems two new names are now being tipped to guide United into a new era.

According to The Sun, the Red Devils sent scouts to watch Schalke's Leroy Sane and Joao Mario of Sporting Lisbon over the weekend ahead of a potential £67 million summer swopp.
The 20-year-old Sane, who United have long been interested in, has enjoyed an excellent campaign in the Bundesliga and become one of Europe's most highly sought-after players.
Reports suggest Barcelona and Manchester City are also tracking the exciting youngster.
Eight goals and six assists in 33 league appearances represents a fine return for someone of Sane's age, suggesting he would be worth the £40 million Schalke are demanding from any potential suitor.
Where Mario is concerned, the Portuguese is also a reported target across Europe having been the subject of a rejected £27 million offer from Paris Saint-Germain.
Sporting rate the 23-year-old very highly - as does agent Jorge Mendes.
He said: "For me, he is without doubt the best Portuguese player in the Portuguese league.
"Joao Mario has the qualities to play for one of the best clubs in Europe. We have to wait and see what happens, but such transfers are positive for Portuguese football.
"It's good that Portuguese players are showing they can play at big clubs."
In potentially joining United, Mario would be following in the footsteps of Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani, who enjoyed successful spells at Old Trafford after moving from Portugal.
The Red Devils have a rich history of dealing with Sporting and will only hope any potential deal for Mario would reap the same rewards.
Elsewhere, United have reportedly offered Zlatan Ibrahimovic a one-year deal to join them this summer.
The Paris Saint-Germain striker will become a free agent when his contract expires and could spark a transfer saga of huge proportion.
