A potential bout between undefeated boxing champion Floyd Mayweather and the irrepressible UFC superstar Conor McGregor has been dominating headlines ever since it was first spoken about last week.

The two men are obvious superstars and between them are easily the two biggest names in combat sports, with McGregor being the King of UFC and Mayweather dominating the boxing landscape to become the best fighter of the 21st Century.

Unsurprisingly, Mayweather is incredibly enthusiastic about a meeting in the ring between himself and 'The Notorious', going as far as to say that McGregor is the only man he would come out of retirement to fight.

Speaking to ESNews, the now-retired superstar seemed pretty excited about a potential matchup against the Irishman.

"If I do fight, it's only against Conor McGregor ... not against nobody else," said Mayweather.

"Because this matchup is so intriguing. You have (a boxer) against an MMA fighter - one of the best MMA fighters to ever ... stand up and do it," he added. "He's a strong fighter and when I look at his fights, he's a little faster than I thought he was."

Continuing to tease a clash with McGregor makes a lot of sense for Mayweather, who probably has dollar signs for eyes whenever the topic of a clash with the UFC champion comes up in conversation with reporters.

Floyd's retirement fight against Andre Berto was an absolute flop at the box office, with people keeping their money in their wallets instead of watching the undefeated star go up against an incredibly weak opponent who had a minuscule chance of winning.

So, with the champ sitting on 49 wins, 50 is a lot nicer looking number - and if he can make McGregor that opponent then box office records will absolutely be broken and Mayweather can finally retire a happy man, landing the $100m he wants for the fight.

Mayweather has apparently thought about more than just the purse. The boxer claimed that he and his team are already booking possible dates and venues for the event.

"I'm pretty sure we're going to have a master plan to make that fight happen," said Mayweather. "It hasn't happened, yet, but we locked down some dates, me and my team, me and Al Haymon, me and Leonard Ellerbe. We locked down some dates, in different countries, in different cities in the United States."

If this fight does happen then there is no doubt it will be a global event, with millions of people all over the world tuning in. Let's hope it does.
