It’s an ongoing debate that will never cease for as long as they live: who is the better player, Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi?
The prolific pair have dominated world football for the best part of ten years now and show no signs of slowing down following another season of goals and sheer brilliance.
Many have tried but few have succeeded in justifying exactly who the better player is, with their goalscoring records and trophy cabinets equally impressive.

However, if there’s one man who has the right to share an opinion on who the better player is, it’s Sir Alex Ferguson.
The former Manchester United manager is one of football’s most well-respected figures and has had the privilege of seeing both Ronaldo and Messi become the phenomenal players they are today.
And now, Ferguson has given his own verdict on who the superior individual is, and why.
Speaking at a charity event in Dublin recently, per The Sun, he said: “When people talk about who is the best around at the moment, quite rightly it comes down to Messi and Ronaldo.
“There's no doubt Messi is a fantastic player. When the ball arrives at his feet, he caresses it like he was wearing slippers.
“But I would say that Messi is very much a Barcelona player. He dazzles in that team. Ronaldo could play for Stockport County and he’d still bang in hat-tricks most weeks.”
Despite failing to steer Real Madrid to the La Liga title, it’s been another marvellous season for Ronaldo. In 47 appearances in all competitions, he’s scored 51 goals, 16 of which coming in Europe.
The Portuguese can yet guide Los Blancos to silverware, though, when they face rivals Atletico Madrid in the Champions League final on May 28.
"He’s got everything,” Ferguson continued. "He’s unbelievable in the air, he’s got two great feet, he’s lightning fast, brave as a lion - and don’t even get me started on his technique.
“We all know how vain he is because he looks like a modern day Adonis.
“But that is a testament to his work ethic. You go to his house and he’s got a gym, bikes, hot and cold splash pools, the lot.
“He so much wants to be the best that he does everything with an incredible intensity.
“When he was at United he had the greatest work ethic you could ask for, and that hasn’t changed. He’s a great kid and a really great footballer.”
Considering Ferguson is famed for his keen eye for talent, it’s hard to disagree with him.
