John Barnes believes Liverpool must sign high-quality players in every position

Following Liverpool's Europa League final defeat to Sevilla on Wednesday night, general consensus dictates that Jurgen Klopp must splash the cash in the summer transfer window.

The Reds entered the break 1-0 up in Basel but conceded three goals in what was an abysmal second-half performance, particularly from their defence.

While the future is undoubtedly bright on Merseyside, widespread change is needed if Liverpool are to challenge for a Champions League spot next term.

Club legend John Barnes echoes that sentiment and insists the Reds must sign any high-quality players available to them this summer.

The 52-year-old believes Liverpool must look to strengthen in all areas of their squad.

He told Omnisport, per Goal: “I don’t think that Liverpool are at a point now where we can afford to turn quality down even if it’s not needed, because I think we need to get the quality in.

“So for example we may end up with an attacking midfield player, but if one of the better attacking midfield players comes up we are going to get him.

“Obviously we’re looking at the defensive situations, however the defence has done OK in the last couple of weeks, so I just think it’s in terms of getting numbers in and quality where you can actually find it.”

Barnes ultimately believes the key to Liverpool’s future success lies in buying players of Mario Gotze’s quality.

“Anybody would look at Gotze,” he added. “I mean he would go to Real Madrid and other clubs as well.

“As I said, if players of his ilk become available and there’s a possibility of getting them, you may say we need a player in a different position more urgently but if you can get a player like that we should definitely do that.”

Greater consistency - alongside new arrivals - is also needed following a season where Liverpool have torn opponents apart one week and struggled the next.

“They’re going to have to improve in the league, that’s the most important thing,” Barnes continued. "If you look at where we are in the league that’s not where we want to be.

“But for that to happen we need to improve the squad. We’ve got [Joel] Matip coming in so I think the most important thing is the acquisitions that can be made before the start of the season.”

Defensive reinforcements must be a priority amidst criticism for Simon Mignolet and Alberto Moreno, the latter particularly scrutinised for his poor performance in Basel.

It was the Spaniard’s mistake that led to Sevilla’s equaliser in the second half, which saw Liverpool fans and legends call for manager Klopp to sign a replacement.
