Experienced coach Van Gaal may well have secured FA Cup silverware at Wembley on Saturday, but he has endured a topsy-turvy time at Old Trafford.
Indeed, it appears that his failure to secure a place in next season's Champions League competition will ultimately cost him his job.
But, according to The Guardian, failure to secure a place in Europe's elite competition, hasn't been Van Gaal's only issue in Manchester.
It certainly appears that there has been some unrest in the changing room, with the aforementioned trio seemingly unhappy under his regime.
Carrick, 34, will see his contract run out at the Theatre of Dreams shortly, but it appears that he could now stay on at the club.
De Gea, who almost departed United in favour of a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid last summer, was reportedly ready to leave if Van Gaal was set to see out the final year of his three-year contract.
Then there's Herrera, who has endured a tricky couple of years at United. The Spaniard has quickly established himself as a fans' favourite but hasn't been able to secure a regular place in the starting XI. He was an unused substitute during the club's FA Cup victory over Crystal Palace.
Mourinho, then, has a number of decisions to make at United as he goes in search of changing the dynamic of the side. Certain players will surely leave, but fans of the club will also be hoping to see a number of top quality additions arrive.
It's safe to say that he will be determined to do everything he can to help the club return to the summit of England's elite division.
One thing is for sure, after his nightmare campaign at Chelsea, he will be desperate to prove his critics wrong. Things are about to take off at Old Trafford.
