Lionel Messi and Stephen Curry don't typically rub shoulders too often, but their has been a brooding friendship in the works ever since they exchanged jerseys over Instagram.
Lionel Messi is arguably the best footballer in the world, and Stephen Curry is arguably the best basketball player on the planet today. They certainly share common ground in terms of status and ability, but the worlds of their respective sports rarely, if ever, cross paths.
However, after the Golden State Warriors forward congratulated Messi on reaching 30 million followers on the social media platform, Instagram, a friendship was struck up.

Curry sent the Argentine forward one of his jerseys to commemorate the achievement as he wears the number 30. Only last month Messi repaid the favour when his basketball counterpart reached 10 million followers on the same site by sending Curry one of his shirts, as he dons the number 10.
The difference in their number of fans on the site is a glaring indication of the reach of both sports and the length of time both men have spent in the spotlight. Messi has been at the top of the game for a long time now, whereas Curry has only recently challenged the likes of LeBron James and Kobe Bryant as household names.
Regardless, Messi is set to visit the Bay Area with his Argentina teammates this summer in preparation for Copa America and it appears as though the two global superstars are bound to meet.
Speaking to Sports Illustrated, the 28-year-old five-time Ballon d'OR winner insisted although football remains his main focus this summer, he can't hide his ambition to meet his social media buddy.
"Soccer will be the main focus while I’m in the Bay Area, naturally, but part of me is also hoping to meet Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors. Seeing him play is magical. Everyone loves what he does: basketball fans, teammates, rivals. Our small sizes, and even our playing styles, are similar. In December he sent me his signed Warriors jersey. I sent back my signed shirt in April to return the favor."
Messi is right, there are parrallels between their statures and skillsets. Curry also mentioned a few months back that the Warriors sometimes watch footage of the diminutive forward and his Barcelona teammates.
Now Messi has had his say on Curry's style of play and the Barcelona legend has clearly been playing close attention to the unanimous MVP's style of play.
"If you watch Curry play—or, just as revealing, warm up before the game—you notice his relationship with the ball. It’s like his body and mind are always on the same wavelength with el balón."
One would think these two could hang out for months just talking about what they achieved.
