Arsenal should demand out-of-favour midfielder Mario Gotze in any negotiations with Bayern Munich for Mesut Ozil.

Ozil, who enjoyed a fine season with the Gunners and helped them finish runners-up to Claudio Ranieri’s Leicester City, could be on the move this summer, having delayed any contract talks with the club until after the European Championships this summer.

Gotze has been linked with a move away from the Allianz Arena having failed to shine in Pep Guardiola’s three years at the club, but despite committing to the Bundesliga champions, he could still yet jump ship.

If Arsenal were to lose their German playmaker, then they should attempt to replace him with another. Gotze may not have blossomed into the player many expected at Bayern, but his form for Borussia Dortmund is proof of his obvious talent and ability.

Exit talk

After two relatively average seasons for Arsenal, Ozil returned last summer and immediately hit the ground running, scoring twice in his first six games and firing the bullets for strikers such as Theo Walcott and Olivier Giroud to fire.

However, such brilliance has now led to speculation that he could quit the north London club.

Ozil won La Liga with Real Madrid and the World Cup with Germany in 2014 and is no doubt desperate for more trophies to go alongside those already won. Second-place will not sit well with him.

Bayern are keen to rebuild under Carlo Ancelotti having failed to win the Champions League during Guardiola’s tenure, and may table a bid higher than the £42 million Arsenal paid to Madrid to lure the 27-year-old back to the Bundesliga.

Gotze deal?

Gotze has been linked with a move to Liverpool due to his positive relationship with Jurgen Klopp, but the thought of dropping down to the Europa League means he could favour a move to Arsenal given their status as a Champions League club.

The 23-year-old was once regarded as one of the biggest up and coming talents in the world, but he has looked jaded by the pressures of playing for Bayern ever since he left Dortmund for their fierce rivals in 2013.

However, despite his difficulties, he remains a fantastic player and his winner in the World Cup final against Argentina is proof of his talent.

He could be the perfect replacement for Ozil if his compatriot leaves the club this summer, and it would be another welcome arrival at the Emirates after the signing of Swiss midfielder Granit Xhaka.
