Liverpool are close to signing Herrera.

Hector Herrera 'a step away' from signing for Liverpool

Published 4 Comments

It’s certainly clear that Jurgen Klopp wants his transfer business done early this summer.

The German manager has already confirmed the signings of Loris Karius, Joel Matip and Marko Grujic and is just “ a step away” from completing a fourth summer signing.

That’s according to Fox Sports Mexico journalist Vladimir Garcia who claims the Reds are closing in a deal with the midfielder Hector Herrera.

The journalist tweeted in his native language regarding the deal but it translates as: “Hector Herrera is a step away from leaving Porto to Liverpool (Pachuca [his former club] has 30% of his right.)”

The claim certainly comes out of the blue with Liverpool not previously being linked with the 26-year-old.

However, Liverpool fans are understandably excited after being linked with the talented box-to-box player.

Herrera managed nine goals for Porto last season and scored during Mexico’s 3-1 victory over Uruguay in their opening Copa America fixture.

It certainly appears as though Klopp is keen to add to his midfield this summer. Grujic has already signed and it seems Herrera could be next through the door.

They could join James Milner, Jordan Henderson and Emre Can all vying for a place in Liverpool’s central midfield.

However, the futures of Lucas Leiva and Joe Allen appear uncertain and could be leaving Anfield in the coming months.

It’s believed Herrera is likely to cost Liverpool around £14 million if they manage to take that next step and complete the purchase of the Mexican.

With Porto finishing third last season, they will be absent from the Champions League meaning Herrera could well be looking for a new challenge. Although Liverpool can’t offer any European football next season, the prospect of playing under Klopp and the likelihood that they’ll soon be competing for major honours once again could convince Herrera to join.

Herrera impressed two years ago in the World Cup for Mexico and his fine displays prompted Rio Ferdinand to tweet: “If I'm a manager right now & needed a midfielder who isn’t going to cost a bomb, Mexico’s Herrera would be top of the shopping list! Impressive.”

There you go then Liverpool fans.
