9 things Manchester City fans should know about Oleksandr Zinchenko

The Pep Guardiola revolution may have only just started at Manchester City but the club is already being linked with a whole host of exciting young stars.

One such player is Oleksandr Zinchenko, a Ukrainian winger who, according to the Manchester Evening News, is very much on City's radar.

So what should Blues fans know about the 19-year-old? Here are a few things for starters.

1. Ukraine Origins

Though Zinchenko currently plies his trade in Russia for Ufa, he actually came through the ranks with Ukrainian giants Shakhtar Donetsk, after impressing as part of the FC Shakhtar Youth Sportive School system setup. However, he failed to make a single first-team appearance.

2. Arsenal links

One man who may be more than familiar with the winger if former Arsenal prospect Emmanuel Frimpong, who played alonside Zinchenko for a season during his two-year stay with Ufa.

3. Euro 2016

The 19-year-old has already grabbed the headline in Ukraine, after Mykhaylo Fomenko included the winger in his squad at the expense of experienced stars like Oleh Gusev and Artem Kravets.

4. Andriy Shevchenko

Zinchenko's inclusion came after the midfielder bagged his first international goal for Ukraine in a 4-3 warm-up friendly victory over Romania on May 29 2016.

In doing so, he became Ukraine's youngest ever international goalscorer, beating Andriy Shevchenko's record, at just 19 and 214 days.

5. Borussia Dortmund

Back in April, Zinchenko had looked set for a move to Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund, with his agent, German Tkachenko, going on record in quotes translated by ESPN.

"I am almost certain that Oleksandr Zinchenko will move to Borussia Dortmund. Dortmund have already made the decision,” Tkachenko said.

Despite these claims, Ufa general manager Shamil Gazizov was insistent that Dortmund were not the only club negotiating a deal for the midfielder.


6. Big Goals

Though Zinchenko only bagged two goals for Ufa last term, they came against impressive opposition in the form of Zenit St Petersburg and surprise Russian Premier League title challengers Rostov.

7. Mr Versatile

During his time with Ufa and Ukraine, Zinchenko has played in a range of positions, with indicating the 19-year-old has been deployed in no fewer than eight different roles on the pitch.

8. Mr Nice

Though primarily a winger, Zinchenko has also garnered praise for his defensive contributions, in particular his tackling and aerial abilities. Though also known for breaking up attacking play, the 19-year-old averages just one yellow card for every eight first-team appearances.

9. Loan Likely

Zinchenko could yet star at Euro 2016 but it is widely believed that the midfielder will move away from the Etihad, should he sign for City, with the Manchester Evening News reporting as much.

Zinchenko would most likely head out on loan, in a similar deal to the one that saw Bruno Zucculini temporarily move away from the club.
