Michael Carrick has signed a new one-year contract with Manchester United, bringing an end to weeks of speculation over his future.
The 34-year-old had been tipped to leave Old Trafford after the arrival of Jose Mourinho, who is expected to oversee drastic changes to the Red Devils squad.
However, despite concerns over his fitness, Mourinho sanctioned a new one-year deal, which Carrick has now signed. Speaking to Manchester United's official website, Mourinho explained why he made the decision.

"Michael is a very intelligent midfielder and a great reader of the game,” Mourinho said. “I am pleased that he will be extending his contract. His form this year shows his ability and his enjoyment of the game are as strong as ever.
“Michael has a wealth of experience from his many years at the club and that knowledge will be invaluable to me. I am really looking forward to working with him.”
And Carrick has insisted he is delighted to extend his stay at Manchester United, where he has been since joining from Tottenham in 2006. Although his role in the squad may be under question, he insists he is excited by the prospect of working with the Special One.
"This great club has been a part of my life for the past 10 years, so I am delighted that this incredible journey is continuing," he said.
“It’s great to have the opportunity to work under Mourinho, who has achieved so much during his managerial career. I would like to thank the fans for their unwavering support. Winning the FA Cup was a special moment and, hopefully, we can go on to win more trophies in the future."
Carrick becomes the third Manchester United player to sign a new contract under Mourinho's short tenure with youngsters Marcus Rashford and Cameron Borthwick-Jackson committing their long-term futures to the club.
The Red Devils have also sealed the signature of Ivory Coast defender Eric Bailly, who cost £30m to sign from Villarreal.
On Bailly, Mourinho said: “Eric is a young central defender with great natural talent. He has progressed well to date and has the potential to become one of the best around.
“We look forward to working with him to help nurture that raw talent and fulfil his potential. Eric is at the right club to continue his development.”
