When France’s opening game of the 2016 European Championship looked like ended in miserable fashion, Payet stepped up to score a miraculous goal in the 89th minute.

The West Ham man picked the ball up from 20 yards before unleashing a scorching effort into the top corner with his left foot. Scroll down to watch the goal.

Payet was quickly replaced by Didier Deschamps so that the crowd inside the Stade de France could afford him a standing ovation.

And such was magnitude of the occasion that the 29-year-old wept as he left the pitch.

Fantastic night

France will remember this night for some time.

The country has faced such hard times of late but to host Euro 2016 was an opportunity to return a smile to the faces of millions.

However, when Bogdan Stancu equalised minutes after Olivier Giroud’s second half goal, it looked for a moment like the opening game of the tournament would end in a draw.

But Payet had other ideas.

He simply doesn’t score bad goals.
