Raphael Guerreiro may have been a better option to take Portugal's late free kick..

Cristiano Ronaldo trolled by FC Lorient over free kick fail

Published 1 Comments

Cristiano Ronaldo has come in for plenty of flack following Portugal’s 1-1 draw with Euro 2016 minnows Iceland and now Raphael Guerreiro’s club FC Lorient has decided to get involved.

A teammate of Ronaldo’s for Portugal, Guerreiro is reportedly on the brink of a move to Borussia Dortmund, having also attracted interest from both Arsenal and Liverpool.

It follows a standout campaign in Ligue 1 with the unfancied French side, where Guerreiro has carved out something of a reputation for scoring impressive free kicks.

So, when Ronaldo tried and failed, miserably, to find the net from a dead ball opportunity that appeared to be in the perfect position with mere minutes remaining, Lorient could not resist poking fun at the Real Madrid man.

The result was a tweet showcasing Ronaldo’s rubbish last-minute attempt contrasted with a fine Guerreiro free-kick goal from a similar situation.

It was a tweet also went some way to demonstrating why the 22-year-old fullback is in such demand this summer.

Capped eight times by Portugal to date, Guerreiro has already scored twice for the national team and could have been a better option given Ronaldo’s less than impressive recent record from free kicks.

However, the Ligue 1 sensation probably did not want to rock the boat or even upset Ronaldo for that matter, given that he regards him as his favourite player and even dreams of one day turning out alongside CR7 for Real Madrid.

Scoring a few free kicks against either Austria or Hungary would help – provided Ronaldo lets him have one.
