Antoine Griezmann denies he was using Chelsea on Football Manager

Published 1 Comments

You know it’s silly season when footballers are being linked to clubs based on the teams they’re using on Football Manager.

Some Chelsea fans allowed themselves to get a little excited this week when a video appeared to show that Antoine Griezmann, the Atletico Madrid and France forward, was using the Blues on the successful video game franchise.

That a host of popular websites - including the Mirror - wrote the story up as if this was a genuine hint from Griezmann hardly helped matters.

Aware of the furore this had caused, Griezmann set the record straight on a video uploaded by the French Football Federation on Saturday.

The 25-year-old, who was playing the game on the French team’s flight to Lille, said: "People talk a lot about me and Chelsea. so I want to say, I play with Lyon on FM.“

Griezmann was rejected by Lyon

Griezmann was actually rejected by Lyon after training with the French club back in 2002.

“It was our biggest mistake in years, a historic mistake,” Gerard Bonneau, Lyon’s chief scout, told Spanish newspaper AS - quotes translated by Football Espana - last November. “We had him every Wednesday but didn’t make a move. In the end, Real Sociedad signed him two years later.

“He wasn’t let go because of his small stature. We don’t only look to keep the physical players.

“The truth is that in his generation and in position, we had three players who also had a lot of promise.

“They were [Alexandre] Lacazette, [Clement] Grenier [both of whom are in Lyon’s first team] and [Yannis] Tafer [now with Swiss side St Gallen].

“He was let go and it was a shame.”

Griezmann is now a superstar

Griezmann has gone on to become one of the world’s best players, with Atletico Madrid head coach Diego Simeone recently claiming his number seven is one of the top three players on the planet alongside Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
