If Manchester United sign Borussia Dortmund winger Henrikh Mkhitaryan then Jose Mourinho will be solving a problem that has been hampering the club for years.

Not since the days Cristiano Ronaldo ruled the roost have the Old Trafford outfit possessed a winger capable of delivering silverware aplenty.

But the 27-year-old, whose agent has confirmed United’s interest, could be set to solve that problem if Mourinho can convince Dortmund to sell up.

Memphis misery

Just a year ago United fended off interest from European giants such as Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool to sign Netherlands winger Memphis Depay.

The 22-year-old had helped PSV Eindhoven win the Eredivisie title by scoring 28 goals in 40 games, and a reunion with Louis van Gaal was meant to be the perfect move for his career.

However, less than 12 months on and Depay is now regarded as one of Van Gaal’s biggest transfer mistakes, having fallen behind the likes of Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial in the pecking order.

The United no.7 now looks likely to move on in the summer, having spent £35,000 worth of his cars sent back to his homeland, meaning that Mkhitaryan could be his replacement.

Huge problems

Despite United continuing to win titles in the immediate years after Ronaldo’s £80 million departure to La Liga titans Real Madrid, many have tried and failed to replicate the same brilliant performances as the Portuguese.

His compatriot Nani, who scored for his country in their 1-1 draw with Iceland at Euro 2016, blew hot and cold before finally being sold to Turkish side Fenerbahce along with Robin van Persie a year ago.

Antonio Valencia arrived as Ronaldo’s replacement from Wigan seven years ago, but despite now being one of the club’s most experienced players has never looked remotely capable of filling the Portuguese’s boots.

And the same could be said for Ashley Young, who has been marred by inconsistency since arriving for £18 million from Aston Villa nearly five years ago.

Final solution?

Even the brilliant Angel di Maria could not solve United’s wide problems, with the Argentinean being sold to PSG after struggling for form under Van Gaal’s tutelage.

Leicester City v Manchester United - Premier League

The club have been linked with blockbuster names such as Neymar and Gareth Bale, but Mkhitaryan may prove to be a brilliant alternative.

He scored 23 goals for Thomas Tuchel’s men last season, and also registered 32 assists as they narrowly missed out on both the league title and Deutscher Pokal to Pep Guardiola’s Bayern Munich.

For years, United have required a player of his calibre and, if the words of his agent are anything to go by, fans finally have reason to be excited once again.
