Bertrand was certainly lucky to avoid being booked. Although it was clearly accidental, the Southampton man’s challenge warranted a yellow card.
Pekarik swiftly returned to action as Slovakia look to reach the knockout stages of the European Championship.
Pekarik takes an arm to the face
Slovakia had Pekarik to thank early on in the match, his late block denying Daniel Sturridge an almost certain goal.
As things stand, Slovakia are third in Group B behind Wales and England.
Victory will secure Slovakia’s passage into the knockout rounds, which would mark an achievement for the national team, and Pekarik admitted before the tournament how the tight-knitted nature of Jan Kozak’s side is the team’s best attribute.
“The biggest strength of our team is, without doubt, an amazing team spirit.,” the Hertha Berlin man told ESPN. “Players hang out together after every match and get on really well.
“Also, our coach (Kozak) is perfect. He has used a perfect blend of experienced and also young and talented players.”
