Whenever an international tournament rears its head around, clubs sit and hope that their players perform well, especially if they intend to sell them shortly after.
That appears to have been true of Juventus, who are widely believed to be offering midfielder Paul Pogba around to Europe's richest. The asking price is £100million but a fine Euro 2016 would have surely seen that increase substantially.
But it appears Juventus' gamble has not paid off. The 23-year-old has so far failed to light up the tournament, which is being played in his homeland. Like Neymar in Brazil two years ago, the country's golden boy has let the pressure get to him.
However, France made their way through to the second round and everyone knows that heroes are made in knockout football. The Round of 16 tie against the Republic of Ireland on Saturday gave Pogba every chance of rekindling his best form.
It only took three minutes for the opposite to prove true. The ball trickled into the France penalty area and Shane Long picked it up. French defenders were all over the place and Pogba moved in to try and clear up the mess. He failed, instead running into the back of the Southampton striker and giving away a penalty, which was converted by Robbie Brady.
Take a look at the foul & penalty here:
Respected BBC presenter and former professional footballer Gary Lineker felt brave enough to call Pogba out on Twitter, calling him one of the most overrated players in the world. Brave from a man who has history when it comes to eating the words he types on social media.
Needless to say, Twitter reacted almost instantly with a number of armchair punters wondering why Manchester United, Real Madrid or anyone else would agree to pay a nine-figure sum for him. Take a look at the reaction below:
Knowing Pogba, there is every chance he has scored a 30-yard howitzer by the time you read this. Be kind. This is live football we're talking about!
