Manchester United appear to be closing in on Borussia Dortmund star Henrikh Mkhitaryan after a breakthrough in negotiations on Sunday.

According to Sky Sports, officials from both clubs came to an agreement on a deal worth £26.3million, allowing Manchester United to move forward with contract negotiations and a medical.

The 27-year-old has been open with his desire to leave the Bundesliga club, using the medium of agent Mino Raiola to get his message out to the public. It was Raiola who confirmed that he would not be extending his contract beyond 2017 and it was Raiola who confirmed his desire to move to Old Trafford.

Those admissions were designed to make Mkhitaryan's position at Borussia Dortmund as untenable as possible, yet officials from Signal Iduna Park insisted they would not let another one of their star players leave in the summer window.

CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke told Bild earlier this month: "We've been negotiating a new deal with Henrikh Mkhitaryan for four months. We now know he won't sign an extension. There was never a promise that he can leave us prematurely."

The deal

But now there is a deal that says Mkhitaryan can leave prematurely and it looks as though he will become the third major player to leave Thomas Tuchel's side this summer. They have already seen Mats Hummels move to rivals Bayern Munich and Ilkay Gundogan depart for Manchester City.

He will become Jose Mourinho's second signing since he took over at Old Trafford last month after agreeing a £30m deal for Villarreal centre-back Eric Bailly. He is likely to be followed closely by Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who is believed to be closing in on a one-year deal.

Trouble for Mata

Mkhitaryan was sensational for Dortmund last year, scoring 18 goals and assisting a further 25 from the right-wing. That is exactly the position Juan Mata has taken up at Manchester United since joining in 2014 and Mkhitaryan is likely to usurp his place without much trouble.

It was always believed that Mourinho's arrival in Manchester would spell the end for the Spaniard. The pair famously fell out during their shared time at Chelsea with the Special One claiming Mata did not fit into his system.

With lightening pace, excellent dribbling and a good work ethic, Mkhitaryan should make the perfect addition to Mourinho's squad. Whether that leaves Mata on the bench or on the transfer list remains to be seen.

Fun Facts: Mkhitaryan is Armenia's all-time top goal scorer with 19 goals. But his quality in front of goal didn't make the difference during Euro 2016 qualifying. The international minnows finished bottom of Group I with just two points from eight games.
