Despite being heavily criticised for his Euro 2016 performances thus far, Raheem Sterling has been handed a starting place for England’s clash with Iceland.
The Manchester City winger will man the Three Lions’ left flank in a game that could produce a quarterfinal placing or national disaster.
It’s fair to say however, that supporters are far from impressed. Roy Hodgson is once again under fire for his team selection and with his job on the line, it’s no wonder fans are surprised.

While many supporters were shocked by his inclusion in the starting XI versus Russia, this was understandable given the 21-year-old’s performances in the preparation friendlies.
Against Turkey, Australia and Portugal collectively, Sterling quelled criticism by garnering an impressive three assists.
Since then however, he has welcomed back mockery with his showings in France. With poor showings from the outset, it’s not taken long for the Englishman’s renaissance to burst in flames.
After an anonymous outing against Russia, the ex-Liverpool forward struggled further in the Wales clash. Having missed a glaring opportunity in just the seventh minute, Sterling was left red faced via a halftime substitution.
Consequently, it comes as little shock that there’s been uproar with Hodgson proving stubborn over Sterling.
England fans have dashed to Twitter to voice their disbelief and disgust at the 21-year-old’s selection:
While the nation will undoubtedly be behind the team in their crucial clash with Iceland, glares will be aimed in the direction of Sterling.
Given his performances in France thus far, the Manchester City forward simply must perform tonight. If not, he surely must bite the bullet ahead of any potential quarter final clash before Hodgson-directed criticism reaches an unprecedented level.
It’s sink or swim for Sterling and he simply can’t afford to choke.
