Despite their ‘on fire’ forward not playing, Northern Ireland exceeded expectations in France by reaching the last-16 before a devastating defeat to Wales.

But that loss didn’t stop the players from getting a heroes' reception upon their return. The squad were introduced individually to their adoring supporters on a huge stage back in their native country.

Everything was pretty ordinary until it was Grigg’s turn to be introduced.

“This next bloke is going to be pretty popular,” said the presenter.

“There’s a song about him, I think,” he added.

As song as Grigg appeared on the stage, the 90s pop song ‘Freed from Desire’ came on. The Northern Irish fans knew exactly what to do and they absolutely smashed it.

Take a look at the brilliant scenes in the video below:

Grigg’s song was such a talking point during the summer’s competition that even Germany defender Mats Hummels was asked if their defence was terrified ahead of the clash against Northern Ireland.

"I really love this song. I would like to say yes [our defence is terrified] but I can't agree.

"I heard about this phenomenon and all the actions. Even about the phone call at the fire department. I really like stories like these.

"I will ask him to exchange shirts with him but I think many of my colleagues will have the same idea. I hope he won't score against us but I am already a huge fan of him and his story."

Unfortunately, there was no fairytale ending for Grigg and Northern Ireland but he will never forget the competition where almost every fan was singing his song in France.
