Jose Mourinho’s arrival at Manchester United could bring Memphis Depay’s stay at Old Trafford to a swift end.

The Dutch winger endured a difficult debut season following his £25 million signing from PSV Eindhoven last summer.

And Memphis could be axed as Mourinho looks build a team that can challenge for the Premier League title.

The matter of where the 22-year-old could go hasn’t been heavily discussed; merely the point that he could be sold.

However, bookmaker Ladbrokes has released odds on Memphis’ next club and their prediction is rather surprising.

They’ve given odds of 7/4 that Memphis’ next club is United’s rivals, Liverpool.

Mourinho can't take the risk

Mourinho may have placed Memphis on the chopping board but he’s unlikely to repeat the same mistake he made with Petr Cech again.

The Portuguese deemed Cech a surplus to requirements last summer and, rather oddly, sold him to Arsenal for £10m.

Arsenal’s season may have ended in disappointment but Cech was one of their best players. Because of Mourinho’s decision, the Gunners now have a goalkeeper capable of helping them win the title.

Memphis may not be on Cech’s level but it’s easy to forget how highly he was viewed when United announced his signing last year. Mourinho simply can’t take the risk of allowing potentially watching Memphis blossom into a star at Anfield.

Adding to the doubt is Liverpool’s recent signing of Sadio Mane. With Mane, Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Adam Lallana all competing for attacking positions, it’s certainly not a position that is lacking depth or talent.

All Man Utd players will get a shot

Memphis’ next likely destination, according to Ladbrokes, is either Leicester City, Stoke City or PSV, all of whom are given odds of 10/1 to sign the winger.

Arsenal are 14/1, Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea are 16/1 and Manchester City are 20/1.

According to the Mirror, Mourinho has assured each of his players that they will be given an opportunity to impress in pre-season before he cuts his squad.

That means Memphis, Juan Mata, Marcos Rojo and Daley Blind could all feature in United’s pre-season tour of China.

Louis van Gaal brought Memphis to the Premier League but the Dutch player had an inconsistent season, scoring only two goals in 16 league starts.

United haven’t been linked with a player who could potentially replace Memphis, which is perhaps a sign that Mourinho remains confident that he can turn it around.
