The 27-year-old will be Jose Mourinho's third signing as Manchester United manager.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan to Manchester United makes perfect sense

When Jose Mourinho signed for Manchester United, it was a statement of intent by a fallen giant ready to reclaim its place at the very top of the footballing ladder.

The very next step was rebuilding an unbalanced squad that required major surgery, and that is already beginning to take shape.

The signing of Eric Bailly from Villarreal will add some much-needed steel to a porous defensive unit, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic being Zlatan Ibrahimovic will bring back the flair that has been missing from United since the Sir Alex Ferguson era.

However, it is the signing of Henrikh Mkhitaryan that should excite United fans the most.

The 27-year-old was in the form of his life for Borussia Dortmund and if that is anything to go by then United fans are in for a treat.

Although there is the possibility that he might prove to be a stylistic mismatch for a Jose Mourinho team, Mkhitaryan brings the kind of quality that United have been missing.

Swapping the Champions League for the Europa League must have been a tough choice, but the lure of working with Mourinho and the huge wages that he could pocket in England should have made that choice an easier one.

With 20 goals and 21 assists in 50 games for Thomas Tuchel’s side last season, Mkhitaryan carved out a niche for himself as one the best number 10’s on the continent, and that is where the excitement for United fans should start.

Capable of playing a killer pass on the move or striking from a long distance, the Armenian international is an ideal signing for a club looking to refurbish its attacking unit with quality.

While those incredible numbers are partly due to Dortmund having more possession under Tuchel, the fast pace of the game in the Premier league and the lightning quick transition play by Mourinho’s teams should suit Mkhitaryan even better.

Though he might have trouble adjusting to the physicality of the Premier League, Mkhitaryan has shown that he has enough quality to be a success in England.

Therefore, while the signing of Ibrahimovic might get the Manchester United fans excited, it is Mkhitaryan who really matters.
