When Dean Ambrose pinned Seth Rollins at the Money in the Bank pay-per-view to became the new WWE World Heavyweight Champion, the WWE Universe was amazed.
The man they had been backing ever since the breakup of The Shield, who had come so close but ultimately failed, had finally gotten his chance to run with the belt and lead us all out of the boring Roman Reigns era.
However, ever since Ambrose won that Champion, and Reigns was suspended, his run with the title has been pretty boring.
Ambrose isn't doing anything special at all. He is just another man with a belt over his shoulder. Nothing of his 'Lunatic Fringe' persona has been shown at any point since he has been the Champion - and that is a massive shame.
Apart from that RAW after Money in the Bank, where Ambrose got a great reaction and the triple threat match was set for WWE Battleground, Ambrose has spent pretty much all of his time defending his friend Roman Reigns.
Seriously, the most enjoyable person in the main event scene since MITB has been Seth Rollins, who has rightly been calling for Reigns to be removed from the triple threat match for the WWE Championship.
When has anybody else failed a drugs test and been able to keep their place in a tournament? Imagine Andy Murray failing a test at Wimbledon but still being allowed to play in the Final and collect the trophy. It just wouldn't happen.
But, with Roman Reigns not allowed on RAW or SmackDown, Dean Ambrose's job in that time is to be his spokesperson, telling everyone how great he is and how it was only a small mistake that he really, really regrets it guys. Reigns and Ambrose, brothers till the boring end.
Dean Ambrose is basically the WWE's PR mouthpiece. This is the darkest timeline imaginable. And that's why his short reign as Champion has been so underwhelming.
