There is a notion that Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer is not only the best shot-stopper in world football but is also miles in front of his rivals.

It's arguably a fair one; Neuer, 30, has enjoyed an incredible stint as Bayern Munich's No.1 goalkeeper, racking up trophy after trophy in Germany.

He's also the undisputed No.1 for his country and once again proved his class throughout Euro 2016.

That was until he came up against France in the semi-finals of the competition at the Stade Velodrome on Thursday.

Indeed, Neuer had a game to forget as France's star man, Antoine Griezmann, netted a brace to send his country into Sunday's final against Portugal.

Neuer nightmare

The goalkeeper certainly couldn't do anything about the first goal as Griezmann slotted home from the penalty spot, but he was evidently at fault for the player's second strike of the game.

Failing to deal with a hanging cross from Paul Pogba, Neuer had to watch on as Griezmann struck past him once again.

And that, of course, brings us nicely on to how Manchester United fans reacted to Neuer's mishap.

De Gea the best

From what initially appeared to be out of nowhere, United shot-stopper David de Gea began trending on Twitter. Well, it appears that the Old Trafford faithful just couldn't contain their excitement as the supposed best goalkeeper in the world (Neuer) was having a bit of a nightmare.

United fans quickly suggested that De Gea is actually the greatest of them all. Sorry, Manuel, but Red Devils supporters are only backing one man.

And you can't exactly blame the club's faithful for expressing their opinion so vividly. After all, De Gea has racked up the club's Player of the Year award for the past three consecutive years.

It must be noted, of course, that United have struggled throughout that period - they have only finished inside the top four once in the past three seasons - but De Gea has been their standout player by some distance.

Despite Spain's disappointing Euro 2016 campaign, De Gea once again came away with a great deal of credit for a couple of sublime performances.

Some of his saves against Italy - and most notably against Southampton striker Graziano Pelle - were absolutely outstanding.

Perhaps, then, it really could be time to describe De Gea as the best goalkeeper on the planet.
