Sunday night's Euro 2016 final was very much a tale of solid defending and poor finishing - for the most part anyway.

It took until the 109th minute for the deadlock to be broken when Lille striker Eder found the bottom left corner from 25 yards out, which proved to be the winning goal.

THE BEAUTIFUL GAME

If ever a reminder was needed of what football (should) be about, it's this.

Nevertheless, Antoine Griezmann an co. will be licking their wounds this morning after entering Sunday's clash as firm favourites.

Indeed, striker Andre-Pierre Gignac had the perfect opportunity to score in the dying moments of normal time but fluffed his lines and struck the post from close range.

For Portugal, though, it's sheer ecstasy after winning their first major international tournament.

Fernando Santos’ side had their own chances but were largely on the backfoot throughout proceedings.

But when an opportunity did present itself, boy did they take it.

Picking up the ball some 35 yards away from goal, Eder demonstrated superb strength to hold off Arsenal's Laurent Koscielny before firing past Hugo Lloris emphatically.

Try as they might, France were unable to score an all-important equaliser despite enjoying 53% possession and attempting 18 shots on goal, seven of which on target.

Back to the drawing board for Didier Deschamps' side, then.
