Cheltenham boss Keith Downing took full responsibility for his team's performance as they were left rooted to the foot of League One with a 4-1 defeat by Hartlepool.

Hartlepool's top scorer James Brown scored after 19 minutes and three minutes into the second half Michael Gallinagh diverted Anthony Sweeney's cross into his own net. Andy McSweeney and substitute Michael Mackay added before Lloyd Owusu provided a consolation for Town.

Downing said: "The buck stops with me and as manager I take full responsibility. We defended badly when we were under pressure, and conceded three bad goals in the second half."

He added:

"I'm trying to get some balance out there, and during the week he players really work their socks off to get it right.

"I thought we were slightly unlucky to be a goal down at half-time and the game was there for us to get something out of it.

"But the second-half goals were the result of us messing about and giving the ball away."
