After a mercurial debut campaign with West Ham and a glittering Euro 2016, there’s no surprise clubs are tripping over themselves to acquire Dimitri Payet.
The 29-year-old has risen from a £10.7 million purchase for the Hammers to the subject of a transfer storm in just over a year. It’s fair to say the Frenchman has escaped the undulating form of his Marseille days.
However, West Ham fans took a sigh of relief yesterday as reports immerged that Payet had claimed he was “100 per cent staying” this summer. It proved the news fans had been waiting for.

Spectacularly though, Payet’s agent has claimed that the quote is false and the 29-year-old’s stance is different.
According to French publication L’Equipe 21, Jacques-Olivier Auguste explained: "I have no idea where this [interview] came from but in any case he never said that,"
"With West Ham it is quite simple, if a club is interested they will call the club, and then, we will see.
"Now Dimitri is certainly feeling good at West Ham, but to say that he will 100 per cent stay is difficult.
"Because if tomorrow he has to leave, I think he will be burnt in public."
In light of these comments, West Ham fans could face an impatient wait until the transfer deadline. There can be little understating the magnitude of the loss if Payet was to leave.
The ex-Marseille man bagged the Hammer of the Year award in his inaugural campaign and scored a plethora of jaw-dropping free kicks. Seventeen goals and 14 assists throughout 2015-16 is certainly an impressive return.
While Auguste’s comments far from implicate an exit, it certainly shows that Payet donning a West Ham jersey next season isn’t a given. Supporters can only hope they don’t lose their finest asset as soon as they acquired him.
