Henrikh Mkhitaryan impresses on first Manchester United appearance

Wayne Rooney could be forgiven if he felt a little worried watching Manchester United’s first pre-season match against Wigan Athletic this afternoon.

The Red Devils’ skipper will need to fight hard for his place in Jose Mourinho’s starting line-up based on the eye-catching performance of summer signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

The Armenia international, who completed a £30 million transfer from Borussia Dortmund earlier this month, was United’s best player in the first half after being deployed by Mourinho in the number 10 position.

While Mkhitaryan played the majority of his matches for Dortmund on the right wing, Mourinho will be pleased that his new signing looked so comfortable through the middle.
