It's fair to say that it has been a difficult couple of years for Manchester United youngster Adnan Januzaj.

The 21-year-old quickly established himself as one of the most exciting young players in Europe when he burst onto the scene at Old Trafford during the David Moyes era.

Ultimately, though, things have turned sour for the Belgium international recently and he has failed to establish himself as an important player for the Red Devils.

Dutchman Louis van Gaal opted to offload Januzaj on a temporary basis to Borussia Dortmund last season, but the player's spell in Germany didn't exactly go to plan.

Januzaj once again failed to secure first-team football and duly returned to Manchester. Last season must be deemed as a failure for Januzaj, who will now be desperate to get his career back on track.

Januzaj chance

And that could happen under the guidance of Jose Mourinho. Indeed, The Sun claim that the new United boss has been impressed with Januzaj's fine performances in training.

The United squad - minus the players from Euro 2016 - have been together for almost two weeks now and it appears that Januzaj has already made a positive impression on his new coach.

Indeed, the youngster was handed 45 minutes during the club's opening pre-season game against Wigan on Saturday.

Out on the left-hand side of the pitch, Januzaj failed to make a major impact on proceedings, but there's every chance that he will be handed more opportunities to prove his credentials over the coming weeks and months.

As well as Januzaj, the report claims that Mourinho has also been impressed with Phil Jones, who also featured in the second half at the DW Stadium.

Jones, 24, has struggled to maintain his fitness at the Theatre of Dreams and has been unable to secure a regular place in the starting XI over the past few years.

There's a notion that this season may well prove his most important one yet in the pursuit of redemption in Manchester.
