Manchester United fans think they know Paul Pogba’s new shirt number

Published 1 Comments

Manchester United announced their “provisional” squad numbers for the 2016-17 season earlier today.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has taken Anthony Martial’s No. 9 shirt, with the latter now occupying the number made iconic at Old Trafford - 11, of course - by Ryan Giggs.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan has taken No. 22, while the club’s other summer signing, Eric Bailly, is the Red Devils’ new No. 3.

However, the first thing some United fans were quick to notice was that the No. 6 had been left vacant.

Putting two and two together, they are now convinced Pogba will be handed that squad number if - or, perhaps, when - he completes his world-record move from Juventus.

Fans think Paul Pogba will be handed No. 6

Here’s what Man Utd fans on Twitter are saying…

The bookies' also reckon Pogba is getting No. 6

Pogba currently wears the No. 10 shirt in Turin but wore No. 6 for the majority of his Juventus spell.

The bookmakers were confident Pogba would be handed the No. 6 shirt before the official announcement was made.

Betway's Alan Alger told the Daily Star: "It looks like Manchester United and Jose Mourinho will finally get their man, but it remains to be seen which number Paul Pogba will settle on.

"The Frenchman wore the No 10 shirt last season in Turin, but we make his chances of getting his hands on that shirt a 6/1 shot, with captain Wayne Rooney unlikely to give it up without a struggle.

"The No 6 shirt, which he enjoyed Serie A success in, is our 4/5 favourite, while it's 16/1 he wears No 42 - his old United squad number."

Pogba has 'agreed personal terms' with United

Pogba is understood to have agreed a five-year deal with United worth a massive £220,000-a-week.

French publication L’Equipe claimed on Wednesday night that two clubs had agreed a €120 million fee for the 23-year-old, although this was categorically denied in a rare tweet from the player’s colourful agent Mino Raiola this afternoon.

“There is no deal done regarding Paul Pogba,” he tweeted, “lots of bla bla bla.”

However, it’s clear that the deal is close - and an announcement could be made as early as Friday.
