Missing out on Andre Gomes to bitter rivals Barcelona would have certainly come as a big shock to Zinedine Zidane and Real Madrid's hierarchy.
They had been the favourites to sign the Portuguese international for the last few days but the Catalan giants swooped in to confirm the deal late on Thursday night.
Now Zidane has been forced to consider alternative targets to add to his midfield and one surprising name has been linked with a switch from England to the Spanish capital.
Newcastle's Moussa Sissoko became a key man for Didier Deschamps' French team during Euro 2016 and showed more consistency in that one tournament than he has done for his entire career on Tyneside.
Following relegation to the Championship, Sissoko has expressed his desire to move to a Champions League club but until Liverpool switched their attention towards his teammate Georginio Wijnaldum, a transfer to Anfield looked on the cards.
Although Everton are also interested in the 26-year-old, a move to Madrid would be tough for Sissoko to turn down and Zidane is thought to be considering a potential offer.
According to Spanish publication Sport, Madrid officials are not prepared to meet his £35 million asking price and could even offer Rafael Benitez a player to go in the opposite direction.
No further details are provided regarding who that Galactico might be and it could potentially only be on a season-long loan.
The European champions have struggled to make much headway in recruitment this summer and after being priced out a move for Paul Pogba, are running the risk of leaving their business until the last minute.
Of course, there is still plenty of time before the window shuts in September but with all of Madrid's big rivals across Europe already fighting it out for the best targets, Zidane's options are looking thinner by the week.
