Arsenal fans react to rumours Per Mertesacker could be out for five months

Per Mertesacker's time at Arsenal is often met with mixed opinion. The lanky German defender is certainly mistake-ridden but the experience he has brought to the Arsenal back line at times has been vital for the Gunners.

Fans may not enjoy watching the slow defender get left behind by nippy little strikers, but more often than not his expert positioning and defensive nous have aided the Gunners, particularly last season as Petr Cech won the golden glove with 16 clean sheets.

However, according to ESPN, the defender will certainly miss Arsenal's US pre-season tour, highlighting the defensive inexperience they possess at centre-back.

Mertesacker's absence was noted by the club officially on Twitter, but now various other sources on the social media platform are stating that the knee injury he has suffered may keep him out for up to five months.

Naturally, the news was met with gasps of horror from Arsenal fans as they came to terms with the fact the Gabriel Paulista, Calum Chambers and new signing Rob Holding may be the only centre-backs fit on the opening day.

Laurent Koscielny could miss out after his elongated Euro 2016 campaign and Gabriel will miss the tour of the US as well through tonsillitis.

Mertesacker's supposed prolonged absence was tweeted by Kike Marin from El Confidential, a trusted source, and Arsenal fans are now having to face the realistic prospect of facing Liverpool on August 14 woefully understrength at the back.

Desperate calls for talented replacements can be found in most of the reactions, the best of which are below:

Arsenal fans genuinely distraught over a Mertesacker injury, never thought I would see the day.
