Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang caused a little bit of a stir earlier this week after claiming that playing for Real Madrid was his dream and that the Spanish club were the only ones who could tempt him away from Borussia Dortmund.
“The only club to leave Borussia Dortmund for is Real Madrid. But not now. I want to play for Real Madrid, which is one of my big goals in my career. But at the moment everything is great.”
Those quotes were originally published in German publication ZDF and spread across Europe's media outlets with varying translations. And it appears the old-age Chinese whispers may have played a hand, at least according to the man himself.
In an attempt to nip this speculation in the bud, Aubameyang took to Instagram to have a go at the journalists who decided to morph his comments into something that fit their narrative. There was no mention for Google Translate, however, which undoubtedly played a role.
He published this message on the social media website:
'Staying with Dortmund'
After seeing Mats Hummels, Ilkay Gundogan and Henrikh Mkhitaryan leave the Westfallenstadion already this summer, many fans were starting to fear a mass exodus. Aubameyang had been linked with a big-money move to Manchester City but Thomas Tuchel is sure his star striker will still be wearing yellow and black when the season gets underway.
"Right now he is our player, he stays our player," said Tuchel, "I am totally confident [he will stay]. He is a huge personality for us. Right now, I would say he stays but I can't predict the future."
Why the fuss?
Aubameyang went toe-to-toe with the best strikers on the planet last season, scoring 40 goals across all competitions including 25 in 31 Bundesliga appearances.
Needless to say, the Gabon international will be essential if Dortmund are to break Bayern Munich's four-year monopoly at the top of the table and he seems determined to be a part of it.
He recently said: "We have the potential to beat FC Bayern this season and want to cause them problems this season. I find that we have more potential [than last season].
"We added many young players -- they are all very talented. It's the right path to win titles in the future again."
